About this deal

It was so evident that this book was written by someone much, much older with not much sense of modern youthfulness and their interaction.

It’s so easy to close yourself off to people when you’ve been hurt so many times, whether it’s by family, friends or even a significant other. Candice is a Contributing Editor to Grazia and regularly appears on national radio and television news channels to talk about maternal mortality rates for black women in Britain. I’d twigged that bridal magazines and ads were pretty fully White but hadn’t gathered the lack of representation in baby and mum blogs and Instagram accounts: here Braithwaite tells it how it is and demonstrates how she is an agent for change. Candice explains how she would spend ages getting her hair done and the way society viewed her for having 4c hair was internalised. It is a compilation of essays about all the things Candice wishes someone had talked to her about when she was a young Black girl growing up in London. But I must admit there are certain part of this book is a little bit cringy but I think it was intentional by Brathwaite. but if I'd had this as a teen, it would have been a 4 0r 5 stars, so it's hard to do a simple star rating.

We were thrilled to welcome Sunday Times bestselling author, journalist and TV presenter Candice Brathwaite to the Women’s Prize podcast to find out about the five books that have shaped her, from Oprah Winfrey to Harper Lee.So this chapter especially hits home as she talks about how she learnt to understand that she is worthy of love. The murder of her older brother has had her family moving away from the living memory of the crime but Cynthia struggles when it comes to her new way of life. Sixteen year-old Cynthia‘s brother Mike was murdered in London and her parents make the decision to move away to a small town outside of London. As the story progresses, Cynthia grows closer to two brothers—one white and privileged, the other black and adopted—who help her adjust to her new environment. It was eye opening and a must read for anyone who wants a hard dose of reality mixed with the kind of storytelling that draws you in so much so that you don’t want it to end, as painful as it can sometimes be.

She consistently turns stereotypes on their head, from the baby mother with no father in the picture to her care-provider in her own youth being her grandfather. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.

There has always been knife crime however due to media reporting it seems to be a common occurrence amongst youngsters. Having grown up in north London, my knowledge of people falling into ‘road’ life is not quite the same as Cyn’s and Isaac’s knowledge - and experience - of it.
