About this deal

Once you’ve declared a suit color for the card you played, you then take a player token and place it on a central game board grid essentially eliminating that card from the game for the remainder of the round. Joe Huber (1 play) – I agree entirely that Cat in the Box is a clever game – it’s just not one that struck home for me as much as I had hoped. Trick-taking games are usually pretty nice about that sort of thing, since they’re so heavily card-driven.

For three players you can use either the white or purple side of the cards but the board is not extended if you use the white side. Scoring is a combination of two things, one of them straightforward: you score one point per trick that you take during a round, unless you cause a paradox. The Uncertainty Principle is the genesis for all subsequent scientific and philosophical thought regarding quantum physics. Trying to play certain cards with the intent of getting bonus points is good, but playing certain cards to block your opponent(s) scoring additional bonus points can also be helpful. This creates a paradox or an impossibility since we all know there was only 1 of each suit and number pairing in the deck.

No way means it’s a bad game; I just don’t find it to be the most approachable trick-taking game, and I already think trick-taking is a particularly difficult genre for unfamiliar players to learn. When someone creates a paradox, it is a defining moment, one capable of vastly swinging the scoring hierarchy. Plan your tricks carefully as you cannot claim the color of a card with the same number that has already been declared. Players will need to use careful planning to execute a successful game while also meeting bidding requirements and scoring bonus points in an area control mini game. Play only continues until each player has one card left in their hand (if it gets that far) so you will essentially only be playing 8 cards in the round (assuming it gets that far).

Cat in the Box: Deluxe Edition is a trick-taking game for 2 to 5 players, ages 14 and up, and takes about 30 minutes to play. You do not predict the number of tricks—if you win 4 or fewer tricks during a round, you are eligible for the bonus points. I found the pink and the orange to be kind of close in color depending on the lighting, and though they’re slightly different shapes it could be easy to get them confused if you’re not paying attention. The uncertainty as the round progresses, the “oh shit, I only have two cards left and only one can be played, so I hope Bryan doesn’t play that number…crap, he did!
