I found it difficult to like them at times because there were scenes where they were just making the entire situation about them, mourning their son even though they’ve got a SUPER FAB daughter in front of them. Amanda makes a whole bunch of friends and even starts to fall in love, but niggling just below the surface is the reminder that she needs to be careful everything she’s worked so hard for could be taken away. Every few chapters they’d be a snippet of Amanda’s life two years ago, six years ago, or six months ago. Not to be that weird person who only cares about character development again, but she has suuuuuch a strong character voice. I told ’em I was worried ’bout what you might do when you’re alone, since I can’t take any more time off work.

Amanda offers to go for a walk to talk things out and they go to the park and play catch just like her dad always wanted from her when she was younger and he wanted her to be the typical son.Moving to a new school, for any reason, in one’s senior year can be tough, especially when that school is in a different town and involves living with a dad you haven’t seen in six years. My voice sounded like nothing—flat, toneless, with the faintest deepening that made me never want to speak again.

I realized he’d only asked about me as a formality so he could talk about himself, but I didn’t mind; it meant I didn’t have to say that much. This starts off as a BIT of a typical YA contemporary with elements that discuss Amanda’s feelings as a trans girl, and weirdly, that’s what I liked about it.They weren’t fooling around or anything unseemly but her dad takes it hard enough to start drinking after he kicks him out.

Amanda Hardy has moved in with her father to start a new life at a new school, after years of bullying and abuse. I know there are markers that state ‘two years ago’ or something, but personally, I’m not a fan of reading those.A perfect way to close the father/son relationship and leave room for a father/daughter one instead. In some ways, Amanda is quite lucky: unlike her friend and trans mentor, Virginia, she has “won the genetic lottery when it comes to passing. Russo states in her author's note to cisgender readers that, "I have taken liberties with what I know to be reality. In many ways, If I Was Your Girl is very much an issue novel, and I felt like the characters needed room to breathe instead of every single page focusing almost unrelentingly on Amanda’s gender identity.

And I have an immense crush on her southern accent; I think she might be one of the reasons I fell for this so hard. And Side note, I think the authors note at the end is actually read bye Russo herself, so for that reason and the content with it's reassuring message and advice and knowledge, please, please listen. I liked this book a lot because of the sweet romance and, to a certain degree, I was more or less OK with the ambiguity of the relationship.

There is a voyeuristic fascination with this idea that “real trans people” need to somehow prove they’re trans by getting surgery. It was a lovely reading experience to be able to be smiling with giddiness one moment, but feeling heartbroken and wanting to cry the next. The type of book you read and want to immediately share, because it's too important to keep to yourself.
