Description

Utterly unique, thought-provoking, and wonderfully written, If You Could See the Sun was a thrilling ride that hooked me from start to finish. As the only scholarship student at Airington Boarding School, Alice Sun has to be one of the top students.

The humor was so funny; I laughed out loud at certain parts, particularly at Henry’s deadpan responses and Alice’s spiraling. Even a bit of added insight from the aunt would have helped enrich the mythos of Alice’s invisibility; instead, it exists mostly as just a convenient plot tool. they were always competing and trying to best the other and it was so adorable watching them bicker during their classes. HE IS MY YA AARON BLACKFORD (y’all know I never shut up about him - we’re talking ELITE, LOML, FELT IN MY SOUL, THIS IS RARE obsessions). There’s a great moment where she remembers getting second place to Henry in a contest and cried, coz she’d worked really hard to win the RMB500 prize while Henry just entered the contest last-minute on a whim. alice sun, a high-achieving student at airington college, faces a tough decision when her family can't cover her remaining tuition fees. I didn’t mean this book is not enough thought provoking with strong messages like criticizing class differences, racism, inequality, poverty but the way of giving those messages was brilliant!

then we have alice who thinks they both hate one another when in reality henry never hated her AHH I LOVED THAT SCENE WHEN HE ADMITTED IT BYE. In this genre-bending YA debut, a Chinese American girl monetizes her strange new invisibility powers by discovering and selling her wealthy classmates’ most scandalous secrets. after the encounter, suddenly, a wave of unease washes over her as she begins to shiver uncontrollably, her breath quickening and becomes invisible, realizing something is terribly wrong.

As for characters, I didn't feel particularly strongly about them (sans Henry, who reminds me of a teenage version of Henry Golding's Nick Young from Crazy Rich Asians — though he is portrayed as near-perfect, with few flaws, if any).
