But now - just as Father Coffey proclaims the coming of the electricity - the rain clouds are lifting. This book has my heart and I plan to keep it to re read when I need reminding of how important our family is. The ending took me totally by surprise and I had to read the last couple of chapters twice because my eyes leaked (I sobbed) and the print blurred. The characters in this one generally are likeable accept Alys making me warm to the writing of her even more. I cried and I laughed and now there’s a hole in my life where Grace and her dysfunctional family used to be.

Grace had moved in with John and Cissie Edwards to turn their beautiful home, Syn-yMor, into a guest house. We follow Elin as she struggles with her marriage, and Becca as she discovers love for the first time. Grace, in her 90th year, certainly doesn’t act her age and her home by the sea in Dylan’s Quay has been a refuge for her grand-daughter Elin and Elin’s daughter Beca throughout their lives. I particularly liked the dynamic Soozi, Beca’s friend, a talented singer who says what she thinks, usually accompanied by swearing. This heart-warming story about Grama Grace and her descendants is eventful and fraught with misunderstanding.Grace is eighty-nine, she’s proud and independent and enjoys an early morning swim in the sea, no matter what the weather. When I started the book, I wasn’t that sure about the characters as Grace is easy to understand and love, however, the same can’t be said for her granddaughter, beautifully portrayed as a Head Teacher, following in her grandfather’s footsteps, whereas her daughter hates school and the tension between the two is palpable. Meanwhile Grace’s great-grand-daughter Beca is oblivious to all these worries, too busy navigating the highs and lows of teenage life and keeping secrets of her own. Told from each woman's point of view this novel criss-crosses backwards and forwards in time, stopping on key events in their lives. The thread which binds together mothers and daughters throughout their lives is awesomely strong; motherhood forges links of steel across generations, as I’ve seen myself since our own daughter gave birth to her first child - a girl.

The 2019 Christmas Day special of Gavin and Stacey gained national critical acclaim, drawing an audience of over 18 million, winning a BAFTA for TV moment of the year and a National Television Award for Impact. Also found the colloquial grammer used whenever characters spoke irritating, ie the way all the gs were dropped - "nothin" "pickin" etc.

Grace is approaching ninety and a surprise party is planned for her, organised by her granddaughter, Elin, yet all Grace requires is the rift in her family to be healed. It is a joy-filled, life-affirming, sob-inducing novel - with characters you'll come to know and love - from no. Noticed another reviewer mentioned she disliked the way RJ often leaves the endings off words, ie, "nothin" instead of "nothing and "somethin", not "something".

Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One's Gavin and Stacey , which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins. It is such a well written book, with the characters being fully formed and believable, it had me rooting for the best outcome for them all.

This book looks at multi generation female relationships and familial ties as well as what bonds and binds mothers and daughters. P'haps because I'm Welsh myself I can identify with her characters and the use of certain colloquialisms.

Ruth’s second novel, Us Three, was an instant Sunday Times bestseller in hardback and paperback and has sold almost a quarter of a million copies. As the people of Faha anticipate the endlessly procrastinated advent of the electricity, and Noel navigates his own coming-of-age and his fallings in and out of love, Christy's past gradually comes to light, casting a new glow on a small world. The 2019 Christmas Day special of Gavin and Stacey gained national critical acclaim, drawing an audience of over 18 million, winning a BAFTA for TV moment of the year and a National Television Award for Impact. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. She exudes warmth and wisdom, and reading this book makes you feel someone’s draped a warm overcoat across your shoulders. The characters were interesting and well developed and the story was strong enough to keep me reading when I should have been somewhere else!
