About this deal

All adult helpers will be briefed in advance of a tool use session about what tools will be used, the proper care and use of those tools, and the nature of the crafting activity. Tools will be used by one client at a time, partnered with a second client who will be ‘helper’ until it is their turn to use the tool. The handles have a unique shape, specially made for small hands, meaning the chances of slipping are greatly reduced. The handles have all been weatherproofed so will last a long time.

Now, you don’t have go through all these when you have a power drill and know how to use it. History of the manual drill Hold wood firmly in non-dominant hand (i.e. left hand if you are right-handed, right hand if you are left-handed). Keep hand away from end you wish to cut. Each palm drill is easy to use by small or larger hands, allowing the user to drill holes in wood and other small objects with a simple twist of the palm drill. Our palm drills also offer a uniquely shaped handle which reduces the chance of slipping and in turn makes them safer to use. Palm Drill Specifications: Important Notes: Please always provide instruction prior to use and always supervise children whilst using palm drills. When using palm drills always use a left/right motion when drilling - palm drills are not designed to be turned in a single direction. Palm Drill Specs:

Stand so you are cutting parallel to your body and a missed swing will swing past and away from your leg/foot. Tools must only be used within a designated ‘Safe Tool Use’ area – a roped off area with a single entry point. It is also a good idea if you are going nuts on the hand drill to put on a pair of heavy gloves to protect your hands in case the drill bit jams and causes the drill to stop abruptly turning. 7. Make sure to use the right-sized tool for the job.

To put a wedge on the end of a timber, keep angle of blade shallow to avoid catching the blade on wood. Allow the weight of the axe head to do the most work. Using the wrong size drill bit can cause damage to your workpiece by drilling a hole bigger than intended. Sharp tools must be used under the supervision of the Forest School Leader or a designated adult helper. The invention of the strap drill and the bow drill made things considerably easier, but drilling was still a difficult job.It wasn’t until the hand brace wasinventedin the 15 th century that people had a way to make holes consistently and easily. If the drill bit you are using is fairly small, keep the pressure light to keep from breaking or bending it. Palm Drills are an important forest school education tool, allowing youngsters to drill wooden objects such as outdoor jewellery and name badges. Our palm drills are made to a high standard and are the perfect alternative to carrying larger drills, such as hand drills or a bit and brace. By the 19 th century, the first-hand drill was introduced, allowing for faster speeds than any other drill that had come before. A first aid kit will be available, and all participants will know the location of the first aid kit (at entrance to tool use area). The Forest School Leader and at least one other adult will be a trained first aider.
