About this deal

Cut both pieces into stars of equal sizes. Do be aware that your child may have to sit down at some point so don’t make the stars so big that this becomes difficult. To make your angel's halo, you can simply use a plain headband with some silver or gold pipe cleaners. Easy! Find more steps on how to make a halo here.

Villagers / inn keeper / shepherd – t-shirt in brown, beige, darker colours. Or if you can find one with vertical stripes, that would work for a shepherd. A Joseph costume is one of the easiest costumes to make. Make a plain or stripy tunic (an old striped duvet cover or baggy t-shirt will do) and tie around the waist with a length of rope or a belt. An angel Nativity costume is another easy one to rustle up. You may already have a fairy or angel costume at home, or at least a tutu, some fairy wings or a halo or tiara in your dressing-up box. Right, first thing's first: equipment! Get yourself organised with everything you'll need for your Mary costume in our handy list below. That way, you won't be scrambling around the house halfway through making the costume or end up realising you need to go to the shop! You will need:

Make a circle for the halo with the pipe cleaners, and hot glue it onto a headband. Use tinsel to wrap around the halo, if you wish. Then, simply use an old striped tea towel to wrap around the head; this look works for a shepherd or innkeeper costume too. If you don't have a suitable tea towel, try using a pashmina which can be wrapped around your child's head. Ok, tea towel and band were easy enough. I just needed to find a non-musty, non-crumpled one that’s not ‘grey’ from overuse, never to see white again. And a band – bit of elastic would do fine, so he could just slip it over his head. It was a shame we’d given away my mum’s old arabic head-dress from her time living in Saudi Arabia as a child. In the past (well, last year’s nursery nativity) I’ve just gone and bought a nativity costume because I just don’t have the time to sew, find patterns, spend a fortune on material and then have it end up looking stupid. But this year N is a villager in his nativity play. Cut around the semi-circle so that your child has a hole to put their head through. If you like, you could stop here with the tabard, but if you want to make it neater then follow the next steps.

Once you've made the tunic (trust us: it's easy peasy) then you're pretty much halfway there to any Nativity costume. All you need to add are a few accessories depending on the character and you're sorted. Again you can make a simple tunic – using spare colourful or velvet fabric. Add a statement piece of jewellery, such as a large pendant. There’s no need to cut it, no sewing required. Just put on, add a belt and the costume is ready. They’re all in bare feet anyway, and I gave him along sleeved t-shirt in a similar colour in case he needed an additional layer If you've got a little Joseph or a Shepherd, you'll be pleased to know this is one of the easier costumes to rustle up! You simply need to make a plain or stripy tunic and tie it around your child's waist with a length of rope or a leather belt.

As with Mary, make the pillowcase into a simple tunic top. Make cuts down the sides for the arms to come through, and at the top for the head.

But a tunic. I didn’t really want to sew, so I debated using a pillowcase and cutting head and arm holes. The only problem was getting that on and off. N’s not as small as he used to be so I didn’t think a pillowcase would fit. As with Mary and Joseph, use a skirt at home or add cloth to make a skirt longer if needed. Accessorise with a leather belt. However, amongst all the excitement you've probably got the stress of making their Nativity play costume yourself.

Celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with our wide collection of Nativity costumes for adults and kids. Nativity fancy dress is perfect for a live performance at the local town hall, setting the scene for a school play or any other reason you have to dress up and re-recreate the birth of baby Jesus. The Three Kings brought gold, frankincense and myrrh as gifts and now you can too! Re-create the classis style of biblical Bethlehem and the middle east with a variety of three kings and local shepherd nativity costumes. We also have outfits for Mary, Joseph and Jesus as an adult. For children’s plays that demand some fun nativity fancy dress costumes, how about dressing your little one as a star or nativity animal? Camels, donkeys and sheep all set the scene for an endearing school play. Accessorise with shepherd staffs, crowns, facial hair and other add-ones to complete the look. They can wear bright-coloured clothes under the robe, and plimsolls decorated with tinsel and jewel shapes cut from shiny paper. To neaten up the dress, you can hem the edges. You can do this with a sewing machine if you have one, but for a no-sew option use some Wonderweb (also called Wundaweb), or a similar hemming tape. Place the Wonderweb on the inside of the fabric, a couple of inches up from the edge. Then, fold the rough edge of the fabric so that it covers the tape. You can then place a damp cloth on top and run a hot iron along the hem to bond the tape in place. And if your angel or fairy requires some wings, try our fab homemade wings made out of paper plates here. Plus, find out how to make your own no-sew tutu here– and you can pair it with a white top or white leotard to complete your little one's outfit. Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a maiden betrothed to a man of the name of Joseph, a descendant of David. The maiden’s name was Mary. For most Nativity costumes, you can get away with a tabard or a tunic to make up the base of the outfit. If you don't want to buy a new piece of fabric, you could use a blue pillowcase, some fabric from old bed linen, old curtains or you could find some in a charity shop.
