About this deal

FHD] 1920x1080 59.94p, 100Mbps (4:2:2 10-bit LongGOP)* / 100Mbps (4:2:0 8-bit LongGOP) (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, LPCM) *HLG is selectable. Image quality is excellent, matching the best cameras in its class. The S5 captures plenty of detail in its Raw images (both low and high ISO), though there's a bit more moiré than some of its peers. JPEGs display pleasing color and really impressive noise reduction at high sensitivities. The S5 is the only camera in its class to offer a Multi-shot mode, which produces highly detailed 96MP Raw and JPEG images in-camera with effective motion correction. I shot in RAW+JPEG but since the S5 II wasn’t supported by Adobe at the time I made this review, you’re looking at JPEGs out of camera here where you can compare the relative approaches each has for dealing with noise reduction and detail.

The S5 also offers V-Log recording with 14 stops of dynamic range, time-lapse recording, dual native ISO and anamorphic 4K. The vari-angle LCD is likely to appeal to vloggers and video makers, while the in-built image stabilization (IBIS) is also something that should come in very useful. The biggest compromise when it comes to video – aside from that continuous recording limit – is perhaps the inclusion of a Micro HDMI port, rather than a full-sized one. Micro HDMI cables tend to be much more prone to breaking than their full-size equivalents, but it's not a deal-breaker. Performance Incredibly deep and flexible video feature set, including anamorphic and 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording The S5 is very responsive during power-on, menu navigation and focusing. Its newly designed battery is CIPA-rated at 440-470 shots/charge, and you'll almost certainly beat that number in real-world shooting. One area in which performance isn't so hot is burst shooting, which is a sluggish 5 fps with continuous AF. C4K] 4096x2160**** 23.98p, 150Mbps (4:2:2 10-bit LongGOP)* / 100Mbps (4:2:0 8-bit LongGOP) (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, LPCM) *HLG is selectable. To compare noise levels, I photographed this bunch of flowers again with each of the three bodies fitted with the same adapted Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art lens. I’m going to zoom-in for a closer look, before running through the full range of ISO sensitivities. Note the S5 II sensor employs dual native ISO, now with manual as well as auto switching for photo or video. Ultimately, though, the S5 II seems likely to succeed or fail based on its AF performance. There's little reason to doubt it'll be a capable video camera, but the effectiveness of its revised AF system will help define how easy it is to shoot with for both stills and video, and in that department it's squaring up against some very capable competition.Panasonic has also improved its image stabilization system, promising a performance twice as effective as in the S5. For its revised system it's adopted the branding 'Active IS,' though it hasn't been very specific about how these improvements have been achieved. As such, it’s got a number of impressive video specifications. The S5 can shoot 4K at 60p (with a crop applied), or at 30p and using the full sensor. Internally it can record at 10-bit, which has been a key part of the Panasonic Lumix GH5's appeal. If you're looking to shoot lots of 10-bit 4K, one thing to note is that you are restricted to a 30-minute continuous recording time (although you can start recording again once it stops). If you need an unlimited recording time, you can switch to 8-bit. IBIS also of course also allows you to handhold slower shutter speeds than normal, and here’s a shot I took with the 85mm with a shutter speed of 0.4 seconds, the slowest I could successfully handhold a sharp image on the day. Where does that leave a potential Micro Four Thirds successor to the GH5? I don’t know. But I do know that if you’re a hybrid shooter and want a compact camera with intuitive controls and great battery performance, that produces highly attractive, robust images, you can’t go wrong with the Lumix S5. A set of dual dial control dials sit where your forefinger and thumb naturally rest, allowing you to adjust shutter speed and aperture, depending on which shooting mode you’re working in. In the main menu you can set different configurations for how each dial works, and even change the direction of the dials if you like.
