Pupils at Holbrook School in Coventry practised writing very concise non-fiction by crafting tweets to summarize the peppered moths life cycle! The infighting between religious factions takes an unconscionable toll on the female population that was exceptionally difficult to read about. Razak was brilliant to have used a progressive family to journey through this experience, providing home as a necessary balance to the proliferating injustices. Their two daughters are Alma – fourteen years old, prone to wearing a red apple clip. Much of the early part of the book is implicitly told from her viewpoint, giving it something of a young adult feel initially. Due to concerns for the safety of unmarried girls, Daddee Ma arranges an overly hasty marriage for her, including clumsily faking her astrological chart. Alma herself is somewhat obsessed with the world of Djinn’s and gods and of legends and transfers some of this to imagined visions of her promised husband.

Moth is at times a very challenging read posing many questions to the reader and offering insights into a world that is far beyond the comprehension of many of us. There is strength and a beauty in Melody Razak’s narrative. It really is quite difficult to believe that this is a debut novel. Her attention to detail, the dialogue, the sense of time and place is really quite remarkable. Everything I experienced – from the architecture, people, landscape, colour (the food!), the places of worship and daily religious rituals – is filtered into the novel’s minutiae." In contrast, he says, 'The dull colours of nocturnal moths help camouflage them as they rest during the day.' Moths' roles in nature The sounds of muezzin that float across the city are soothing, the air is soft with the scent of jasmine and rose, and conversations are strewn with quotes from Tagore. At least, that’s how the first half of Moth reads. However, this is as much a story of the riving of naivety as it is about the loss of innocence, and partition’s agonies go abruptly from being a political tragedy, discussed over supper, to a source of intense personal anguish. Meanwhile, a “shattered” Delhi fills with displaced souls.And yet, this is the 1940s, and with news of atrocities spilling from Punjab, where religious violence against women in particular grows worse by the day, they’ve let Brahma’s mother – a meddlesome, haunted hater – arrange a match for Alma. Alma parries their anxieties with her own enthusiasm for marriage to the 22-year-old stranger, but even as wedding preparations gather pace, it’s hard to shake the dread instilled by the novel’s dreamlike – nightmarish, really – opening moments. Mom: And why did they make machines? Did they hurt moths on purpose, or was it just something that happened? I would have given this book five stars if it weren't for one glaring flaw: the unnecessary use of "star power." Now, I understand that a lay person who has never heard of The Moth probably won't be enticed by this book at a bookstore until they read "Malcolm Gladwell" or "Darrell 'DMC' McDaniels" or another famous name on the cover. Unfortunately, just because they're famous doesn't mean they can write, and even if they're writers, that doesn't mean they can tell a short story. In my opinion, these "celebrity" authored pieces were the weakest in the collection. However, as a marketer myself, I understand the reasoning behind it--I just don't like it.
